you’d think I’d walked enough for one weekend… 31 March 2013

On the last day of March 2013, despite my recent twenty two mile walk, I was more than happy to go for a wander in the New Foest with Commando. He was off running for an hour so it was never going to be an epic walk but there were a few surprises to be had along the way and Commando had a final trick up his sleeve to make me smile. Frozen puddles

The end of March 2013 was Good Friday and time was running out on the Moonwalk Training front. After a horrible wet twenty miles it was time to step it up to twenty two. The forecast was good, as long as I got home before the afternoon, but it was still icy cold. As ever, there were plenty of moments when I wondered why I’d signed up for this… Continue reading twenty two blue sky miles – first published 29 March 2013

scientists, weathermen and the enchanted park – first published 28 March 2013

March was nearly over and so far there was no sign at all of spring 2013, at least in terms of weather. The days were still cold with the odd flake of snow and the skies were still a never ending grey. The flowers in the enchanted park seemed to know it should be spring though and we’re doing their best to brighten the city despite the chill and the lack of sun. the Eastleigh 10k – first published 24 March 2013

The Eastleigh 10k 2012 was Commando’s first proper race. For me it was a nerve wracking time sitting in the sun on the sports field waiting for him to come back. As I watched people cross the line looking exhausted and on the verge of collapse I began to fear the worst. It was such a relief to see him come back safe and sound. The 2013 race was a whole different kettle of fish in more ways than one. This time I knew he could do it, I had an idea how long he would take and it would be the first time he had a chance to set a PB… Continue reading the Eastleigh 10k – first published 24 March 2013

a muddy wet fifteen miles with Care For A Walk – first published 23 March 2013

One of the highlights of spring for me is the annual Care For A Walk fifteen mile hike through the New Forest to raise money for McMillan Cancer Care. The best part about it, for someone like me who’s so good at getting lost, is that it’s organised by Pete and Mike (amongst others) who live in the forest and know all the trails like the backs of their hands. The 2012 walk was warm and sunny, I was hoping for the same in 2013… Continue reading a muddy wet fifteen miles with Care For A Walk – first published 23 March 2013

fresh cut grass and a scary meeting – first published 20 March 2013

Spring was in the air in mid March 2013 and I was sniffing out every little sign of it, quite literally. The smell of freshly cut grass dominated my walks to work and I had a little company by way of new iPod and an audio book that surprised me a little. At work I was summoned into a worrying meeting with the COO. Did this mean my job was on the line? Continue reading fresh cut grass and a scary meeting – first published 20 March 2013

Twenty hellish miles with goats in trees – first published 15 March 2013

With less than two months to go until the Moonwalk I had hit the long miles with a vengeance. Even the short walk weeks were ten miles plus and, in mid March, I had a twenty mile walk ahead of me. The last thing I needed was bad weather… Continue reading Twenty hellish miles with goats in trees – first published 15 March 2013

The president of the USA , bad news and coffee – first published 14 March 2013

Mid March 2013 and the office was all geared up for a visit from the President of the United States. Obviously not the President of the United States, just the president of our parent company but, from the fuss and tidying, he might as well have been. It was also the day of Gigi and Gail’s redundancy meetings so the mood was fairly sombre and nervous. Continue reading The president of the USA , bad news and coffee – first published 14 March 2013

At the beginning of March 2013 I was lucky enough to be given a CD of eye witness stories from the D Day landings by a retired BBC broadcaster who was going to give talks on the Silver a Helm D Day cruise. After a bit of a false start I downloaded it to my iPod. It made for an atmospheric journey to and from work. Continue reading Quirky sculptures and war stories – first published 5 March 2013

Ten miles and three bridges – first published 4 March 2013

First blossom of spring
First blossom of spring

March 2013 and spring was in the air. This was short walk week on the Moonwalk training although, at this stage, the short walk was ten miles. Commando had gone out to run his usual Sunday two bridge challenge so I thought I’d go one better and try three bridges. Planning the route turned out to be more difficult than the walk and I messed around with maps so long I ended up starting later than planned. It wasn’t long before I ran into trouble…
