The butterflies have been conspicuous in their absence this year for some reason. Although I’ve seen the odd one fluttering over the garden or when I’ve been out walking, there haven’t been nearly as many as usual. The bees have been buzzing around all the flowers in my garden since spring, but I’ve missed the colour of delicate wings drifting from plant to plant. Back at the beginning of 2013 I was on tenterhooks after Mr Bumble’s string of disasters waiting to hear whether she actually made it to Florida and her one and a half marathons. All evening, between plotting my weekend walk and trying not to eat rubbish, I’d been scanning the news channels for items about Florida bound planes diverted to Outer Mongolia due to a flock of low flying pigs or similar. Commando took up running almost four years ago. He’s always been slim and fit. He used to teach martial arts but it’s a dangerous occupation even if you do have black belts in several disciplines. There were injuries, broken ribs, black eyes and any number of strains, sprains and assorted bruises. Throw working nights and lack of time into the mix and it became harder. Something had to give.
