Pacing the Southampton Half Marathon

The day of the Southampton Half Marathon started off chillier than I’d expected. Standing just off the Avenue, opposite the bottom end of the Common, waiting around for the rest of our group I shivered and wished I’d brought a hat. It was just after eight and we were early but, thankfully, it wasn’t long before the others started to arrive and we set off towards the City Centre. By the time the start finish arch came into view it had begun to rain. Now I really wished I’d brought a hat but at least I didn’t have to strip down to t-shirt and shorts and run so I could hardly complain. Continue reading Pacing the Southampton Half Marathon

The rhino hunt gets a little messy – first published 10 August 2013

In front of the Guildhall the rhino trail suddenly stopped being logical and I could no longer simply walk from one rhino to the next if I wanted to see them in order. Either I’d have to walk back and forth, passing some more than once and taking far longer than I’d have liked, or I’d have to look at them out of sequence. It seemed like a good time for a little break and maybe some coffee while I decided. Unfortunately, when I went back to the cafe, it was packed with other rhino hunters so a drink would have to wait. a saturday stroll to look for rhinos – first published 10 August 2013

The Saturday walk on 10 August 2013 was mostly about rhinos. It was sunny and warm so it seemed a good idea to search for the rhinos at the top end of town, the ones too far from the office for a lunch time walk. This had the advantage of taking me through all the city parks along with a few other interesting places that could stand a more thorough visit later.
